Darren Huston - Medium Blog

Darren Huston , the family farmhand turned CEO of $60-billion Priceline Group Inc., is arguably one of the most successful C-suite exports to come out of this province that you’ve never heard of. Born in Hope, B.C., and equipped with a Master of Economics from UBC and an MBA from Harvard, Huston quickly climbed the corporate ladder at Starbucks and Microsoft as a senior VP, including a three-year run as president and CEO of Microsoft Japan. In 2011, he landed at Amsterdam-based travel website Booking.com as CEO; in less than three years’ time, he tripled the size of that operation, and in January of this year, Huston was named CEO of the parent company, Priceline. In addition to Booking.com and its eponymous website, Priceline’s other online properties include Kayak, Rentalcars, Agoda, and Villas. But if you look at a chart of where we’ve been since your earnings call a couple of weeks ago, you’ve changed the conversation. It’s a 20% move in the stock. You’ve added, I think, 10 billion dollars back on shareholder value. What is making the difference now? What are you saying to people that he’s clearly moving the needle? Darren Huston – Well, Simon, I think, first of all, currency obviously is a very impo

When Darren Huston was talking about his life and career, he was shocked by the fact that his audience consisted of many young travelers from around the world and that all UWC alumni also travel - in fact, UWCers As they do so very widely! Alumni are not just the “primary outcome" of UWC. They are also a source of sometimes unexpected ways to support fundraising for scholarships. During that visit Darren Huston gave a memorable lecture to the College students and came up with an idea for a Bookingdotcom. So – Darren Huston thought – how about creating a way for the Alumni to give to the College simply by using Booking.com? The grant is open-ended and variable and depends on our alumni booking, making students and staff members through bookingdotcom: the higher the booking, the higher the grant!
